Business Immigration

Under self-employed people are eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada under the Business Immigration program. Canada welcomes successful entrepreneurs and business people who are interested to set up a business in the country.

To be eligible for Business Immigration, a foreign national must have at least two years of relevant experience to be considered a self-employed person. He must also have the intention to contribute to the Canadian economy in one of the following areas.

  • Cultural Activities
  • Athletics
  • Buying and managing a firm

Start-Up Visa

A start-up visa is offered to immigrant entrepreneurs who have the skills to set up a business in Canada and offer employment to citizens. Apart from completing paperwork, you need to pass language tests in English or French. Your ability to communicate in both languages will allow you to navigate through Canadian business circles easily. One will require a letter of support or commitment certificate from a designated Canadian organization. Foreign business entrepreneurs can acquire permanent residency by starting a business with a designated Canadian organization.

A start-up business must be a new business intended to be operated in Canada which meets the criteria of a qualifying business, meaning that the new start-up business has received a commitment from:

  • 1. A designated angel investor group confirming that it is investing at least $75,000 in a qualifying business or two or more designated angel investor groups confirming that they are together investing a total of at least $75,000 in such a business
  • 2. A designated venture capital fund confirming that it is investing at least $200,000 in a qualifying business or two or more designated venture capital funds confirming that they are together investing a total of at least $200,000 in such a business
  • 3. A designated business incubator confirming that it is accepting the applicant into its business incubator program.

For your application to be eligible for processing, you must:

  • Have received a Letter of Support from a designated entity
  • Meet the language requirements-You must meet the minimum level of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in either English or French in all four areas.
  • Have sufficient settlement funds (transferable and available funds, free of debts or other obligations and excluding any investment made by a designated entity into their business)
